Ribi

Ribi is an artificial chatbot that acts as a virtual friend to help users become more aware of their emotions and connects them with the right online therapist when needed. The application allows people to track their daily moods and makes online therapy easier for everyone.

My inspiration from this project came from my concern regarding the limited accessibility of mental health services in Vietnam, where I grew up. There was a lack of therapy options and mental health resources, particularly for individuals from middle to lower income backgrounds. Recognizing this issue, I became more aware of the importance of improving therapy accessibility and enhancing mental health education within communities around the world.

In the United States, where I am currently based at, statistics indicate that 38% of Americans report waiting more than a week for mental health treatments. Nearly half, or 46%, either traveled or knew someone who traveled over an hour roundtrip to seek treatment.

Traditional mental health services or online therapy platforms may have barriers that prevent accessibility such as societal stigma, financial constraints, and limited availability of resources and self-help tools.

Problem

How might we help people access to mental health services easier and become more aware of their mental health?

Question

The application provides people with the convenience of accessing mental health resources on a digital device anytime and anywhere. It provides users with self-help tools and resources to help people take an active role in taking care of their mental health. With the help of Ribi, early detection and intervention are also critical in managing mental health issues.
